TTUT-BBQs are for the Boys

Samantha: [At a BBQ] Who wants a weiner?
Transexual: Girl, I’m trying to get rid of one! -Sex and the City

  • Last week Couple Wife came to visit me and distract me from Roo’s birthday. It was a good day and we enjoyed lunch and then scouting spots for maternity photos for the 29th.
  • Last Wednesday Match had a few of his work buddies and their families over for a bbq. It’s not often that my reclusive hubby suggests we have friends over, so that made it even more special. It was fun watching all the boys play.

P1080101Shift Buddy wife just had a little boy (he’s just 7 weeks old) and Walking Buddy is 4 months pregnant with her 3rd boy. So this time next year we will have 6 boys between the 3 of us!!

I love how the little boys are playing in the gravel while they hang out with the big boys.

  • Saturday Miss PhD and I went to see The Host, FINALLY. I waited for her to get back from her NYC trip so we could watch it together. Piglet kicked up a storm during the movie. MissPhD spent half the movie with her hand on my belly, feeling all his crazy antics!
  • Sunday the sweet ladies of my church threw me a baby shower. It was so wonderful, and I was blown away by their kindness and generosity to our little boy. One of the ladies made me this adorable wreath:

  • Just look at all the stuff she included on it! The whole wreath was made out of diapers, but she added so many extras. It’s so cool! They also got me an incredible gift-my stroller!! A bunch of the congregation pitched in and went in on the gift for me. It is on order, so they wrapped a big empty box and stuck the picture on it. Here’s what the stroller looks like:

  • I feel so lucky and so blessed to be a part of such a sweet church family. There were also wonderful handmade blankets and sweet little clothes. I’m having trouble deciding what his take home outfit will be!
  • Yesterday I was a busy bee, putting away all of the gifts from the shower, washing baby clothing and bedding, and getting things organized for the nursery. I also went to my 34 week checkup and Piglet is doing great!
  • Next Monday Couple Wife is taking our maternity photos, and I promise as soon as she gives them to me I will post the nursery pictures. I’ve been bursting to do the nursery reveal!
  • Other than that, I’ve been going over my checklists and making sure I have things prepped and ready for Piglet’s arrival. I have my very last progesterone shot on Thursday, and then it’s just a matter of time before he makes his appearance. Hopefully full term and healthy, but otherwise I wouldn’t mind if he arrived in May! I’m so ready to meet him!

TTUT-Prepping for the Baby Shower

Mr. Sheffield: [About Fran and her pregnancy] Ever since she entered her third trimester, her mood swings have been lethal.
Niles: Oh, I know. It’s worse than when Sylvia gave up chocolate. That was the most unbearable hour of my life. -The Nanny

  • The cold I caught last week knocked me on my ass. I am finally, finally feeling better. I developed this cough that made me sound like a wounded seal. It didn’t help that Match would tease me about waddling and said that I looked and sounded like one.
  • I can’t believe I’m just a week away from my 8th month of pregnancy. Well into the 3rd trimester and besides that pesky cold I’m feeling great!
  • I managed to get a few things done that I’ve been needing to do before the shower. I put up new blinds in our bay windows, after my beautiful new windows were installed on Friday.
  • Here’s the before and after of the windows. I’m so glad to be rid of those ugly old black framed windows, and the ugly brown blinds that went with them. I wish I had a before pictures with the blinds. They were brown and didn’t match any of the wood in the room.

  • I finished Piglet’s height chart for the nursery. I plan on doing a nursery tour at the shower (which will include a name reveal!) and this one of the final touches.

ruler height chart:

  • There is still so much to do before the shower. Right now I’m in the process of painting the office ceiling fan, and hoping to paint the guest room one as well. I’d also like to get new drapes for the family room and have those put up this week. Then I just have to deep clean the house (with Match’s help of course!) and finalize the last minute details. I’m so excited for Saturday!!

Nursery Closet Obsession

Claire: Well, generally speaking, Lawrence, when a woman leaves something behind, an earring or a purse, let’s say, it’s not the nesting sign that most men assume it to be. It could mean nothing more than she’s forgetful.
Lawrence: It was her grandmother’s china.
Claire: Oh. You may have a problem.

I’ve been obsessing over the nursery, and doing my typical Virgo thing where I fixate on one thing, and it becomes all I think about. Since I’m waiting for my baby shower in April before buying the rest of the essentials, my latest fixation has been on the closet. I’ve been pestering Match to make built in shelving, but I’m pretty sure it’s not going to happen. Maybe I can butter him up with one of his favorite meals. I wish daddies got the nesting bug the way us mommies do!

Here’s what I’m currently dealing with:

If I had an unlimited budget, and a willing handyman, I would replace the terrible sliding mirror doors with french doors. We are very lucky in that the nursery room is quite spacious, and I would much rather sacrifice a little square footage for the convenience of doors that actually open.  The mirrored sliders constantly stick, or come off the rail and they drive me crazy! Plus I’m not sure I want to look at myself in the mirror when I’m nursing at 3am. I think I’ll freak myself out!

Here are just a few Pinterest pictures that are fueling this obsession of mine.

nursery closet doors

I am so in love with these doors! And you can get to everything inside. Gasp! What a concept. She organized things well, but I think I’d probably do it a little bit differently.

This picture is almost exactly what I would do given the chance, except with the doors from the above picture. PS I also LOVE the crown molding. There’s another project to add to my never ending list of house projects.

I really want the built in drawers. I think that’s such a smart idea, and one that would work well into the teen years. I think I’d get rid of the upper shelf and instead add more hanging space, so the closet wouldn’t have to be re-done when Piglet gets older. I’d also make the shoe rack a little bit bigger, to accommodate bigger shoes as he grows.

Here’s another option that gives more drawer space, and again, I could see this as a grown up closet someday. It’s all just so organized. Makes me drool just a little bit. Now I’m off to show these pictures to Match and convince him that it’s absolutely essential that we make it right away.

How did you organize your nursery closet? Any suggestions?

24 Weeks Bumpdate and Valentine’s Day

Tony: You see, the thing about the human body is, as we know, is that it is a temple.
Gary: Yep
Tony: It’s just that my temple seems to have grown into a slightly larger temple.
Gary: With a big wobbly dome. -Men Behaving Badly

Match and I decided to celebrate our Valentine’s Day yesterday, when there were less crowds. He wouldn’t tell me what he had planned, just that we were going to do something. Phase 1 was breakfast at our favorite local diner. I pigged out on waffles and the waiter sugared up my coffee with hot cocoa and a dollop of whipped cream. YUM! Don’t mind my awesome bed head. We rolled out of bed and just went to breakfast in our sweats.

After breakfast we headed out for Phase 2. We got on the freeway when I guessed where we were going. He took me to Old Town Sacramento for the day! It was really fun wandering around window shopping and taking in the scenery. We stopped in an olive oil shop where they do olive oil tastings. I’m pretty sure it trumps wine tasting for me. We ended up getting some delicious Tuscan olive oil and Serrano honey balsamic vinegar. My mouth is watering again just thinking about how good it tastes! I think I need to have some of our couple friends over for an excuse to serve sourdough bread with the olive and vinegar as a dipping sauce.

We checked out the waterfront, took obligatory cheesy pictures, followed by lunch at Fat City. Match kept saying the sign made it look like “Fat Guy”. I can sort of see it.  And you know a restaurant named fat guy has just got to be good! 😉

When we got home to relax, Match snapped a picture of me updating my blog. I had headphones on because Match was practicing his duck and turkey calls (heaven help me!) and it was making the baby kick like crazy. Either he loved Daddy’s noises or he hated it as much as I did. 😉 We had such a nice Valentine’s Day, and it was so much better than flowers!

Today, actual Valentine’s Day,  I went in for my weekly progesterone injection and ended up having a terrible experience with the nurse. I’ve seen her many times throughout this pregnancy, but for some reason she thought I was someone else. She said, “Oh no kids with you today? Where’s your daughter?” I was like, umm…I lost my daughter in April. She STILL didn’t get it and kept on,”Oh I thought you brought a little girl in with you every time?” and I said, no…that’s why I’m here. Because of preterm labor… this will hopefully be my first living child. THEN, instead of apologizing,  she just goes on to ask how many weeks I am, and said, “Oh wow, you’re really big for 24 weeks. Guess it’ll be a big baby!” Wtf lady? I cried the entire way home. She made me feel like a big fat cow. It was so awful.  I’m only 5ft, so I get that the belly looks really round and big on me, but geez. I’m on target with weight gain, but a comment like that makes me feel like I’m not taking care of myself or something.

When I got home, Match just held me while I cried. Piglet kicked a bunch for me on my way home which cheered me up some. Like he was saying, don’t listen to that mean ol’ nurse, I’m just getting nice and strong for you. Match pointed out that I do have a big belly, but that I’m all belly, and that’s a very good thing. I think it was just the way she had said it, especially after the comment about my daughter that got to me. In this picture I’m pretty red faced because I had been crying.

I hope you all had a wonderful Valentine’s Day and got to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones.  Once again I’m reminded of how lucky I am to have such a sweet and supportive hubby. And even if I am “really big” I can take comfort knowing that I have a healthy baby boy growing in my belly.

18 Weeks and the Bump is Bumpin’

[Ross baby-talks to Rachel’s belly.]
Phoebe: How can you let him talk to your crotch like that?
Rachel: He’s talking to the baby.
Phoebe: Oh! Okay! Okay, ’cause when — when he said “I can’t wait to hear your first words,” I thought, “There’s a trick!” -Friends

-He’s the size of sweet potato, and there’s no question that I’m bumping! I can’t believe just this morning I was complaining to Match that I didn’t feel like I was big enough for being 18.5 weeks. He just shook his head and told me I’m huge.

I guess when I don’t look in the mirror at the belly or at pictures, it’s still easy to forget. But I’m officially bigger than I’ve ever been, and I LOVE it. Even my favorite nurse at Kaiser exclaimed when she saw me, “Look at you bumpin’!”

This week was a hard one for me. At this point in my pregnancy with Roo, I had gone to the ER at 18 weeks, 1 day for heavy bleeding.  From that day on, I got more and more sick, until 19 weeks when I went into labor. So this week has brought on a lot of worry, and I have freaked out over ever twinge and slight cramp.

The good news is everything looks great with our little Piglet. The Dr. immediately reassured me that my cervix is nice and long, that Piglet is growing on schedule, and that he has plenty of fluid surrounding him. And then Piglet decided to tuck and hide the goods, giving us all a well deserved laugh. We wouldn’t have cared if he turned out to be a girl, but we did just announce the gender, and decided on a name. But Piglet is still a He, and just proved he likes to keep his parents on their toes. 🙂

Starting next week, I will officially be in new territory as far as this whole pregnancy thing is concerned. I can’t wait for new milestones, and hopefully we’ll start feeling him kick from the outside!
