Last night we went to our comedy show date night! I’ve been waiting for this moment since Christmas when Match presented me with tickets to see Jon Dore at Helium in Portland. Watching stand-up comedy was one of my favorite things to do in college. I used to go watch my aspiring comic friends perform at open mics, and I love seeing anything from big headliners like Dana Carvey, to the comic contests for up and coming comedians.
I love to laugh, and I have always wanted to share that with Match. He’s never really been interested in comedy, and didn’t think he’d like it. When he got us tickets, I knew we’d have a good time.
Not only did he spring for reserved seats, we managed to get front row!
We had such a great time! Jon Dore was hilarious. At one point he made a chicken butt joke, and we were dying. Match had joked about wearing the Guess What Chicken Butt shirt I got him for Christmas. Talk about a missed opportunity!
After the show, we were both starving. We walked down a block and ended up finding a corral of food trucks, with tents and picnic tables with fires. Food truck food is delicious, especially after a couple of adult beverages, late at night.
It was such a great date night. Match said he loved it, and he would definitely go again. I am so glad I can share my love of comedy with my guy. We need more nights like this, where we try new things together.
Do you like comedy shows? When’s the last time you tried something new for date night?
Last night, Piglet’s godparents babysat Piglet so we could go out on the town. We had a sleepover at their house, and then Geeky’s husband acted as our chauffeur so we could both drink and relax. I was nervous about leaving Piglet, because we’ve never had anyone else put him to bed before. I had no reason to worry though! Piglet loves his godparents and they are so good with him. Geeky texted me that he went right down for bed, no crying or fussing. We were so proud of that little boy! It was so much easier to relax knowing that he wasn’t sad that we were gone.
After dinner, we went out for drinks at the bar we went to on our wedding night. We had hoped to play shuffleboard, but it was full. We did have fun playing with the putting green. Somehow I managed to get a couple in, even though I was pretty buzzed! After our round of golf, Fire Guy picked us up and took us back to their house.
We sat around their firepit, chatting and laughing, and drinking way too much wine. I overdid it and was extremely hung over this morning. I also may have passed out for a brief minute on their great dane! But we had such a good time, and I’m so lucky to have such a great best friend! She even got up in the morning bright and early with Piglet, and let me go back to bed to sleep it off! She’s amazing!! I can’t wait until they have a little one of their own so we can return the favor!
Ross: I studied ka-ra-te for a long time, and there’s a concept you should really be familiar with. It’s what the Japanese call unagi.
Rachel: Isn’t that a kind of sushi?
Ross: No, it’s a concep—
Phoebe: Yeah, it is, it is. It’s freshwater eel.
Ross: Okay, maybe it means that, too. –Friends
Friday Match and I finally got to have a really nice date night. We hopped on the Bart and headed to San Francisco for sushi and I was able to cross off #20 on my Project 52 List.
We both love taking the Bart because it is so relaxing compared to driving in SF. The traffic and the crazy drivers stress us both out. Plus parking alone can cost up to $20 and the train is a lot less expensive. There is always great people watching to be had on public transportation too.
When we got to San Francisco we made the mistake of not knowing exactly where we were going to eat. We thought we would just find something near the Embarcadero stop. Unfortunately that’s near the financial district, which basically shuts down at 5pm. We ended up walking all the way down to Union Square, near all the fancy shops with acronyms like BCBSNC and DKNY. There we finally stumbled upon Hana Zen.
We were lucky enough to be seated right away (on a Friday night with no reservations!) and the first thing we ordered was our favorite Nigori Sake. If you haven’t tried cold sake, you are missing out. It’s one of the sweetest sakes and it goes great with spicy tuna rolls.
We ordered four different rolls and they were all melt in your mouth deliciousness.
We had a great window seat and were able to watch the hustle and bustle of the city. We also got to see a really drunk guy pee all over his buddy’s car before crawling into the passenger seat. It was pretty funny because it wasn’t even 8pm! Who gets that trashed that early?
After dinner we decided to try to find a pub to get a night cap. Unfortunately we had trouble finding one and I, the Queen of the Teeny Bladder had to pee. So we found a Jack in the Box that had a public restroom. Match was still hungry even after all that sushi (damn his amazing metabolism!) so he ordered a burger while I ventured past a group of women who I was pretty sure were prostitutes on the way to the bathroom. It had one of those tokens to get in, and when I did, I walked right into two people hooking up in the bathroom. Luckily I didn’t see much, just a quick scramble of clothes and bodies moving apart but I was still totally grossed out. Needless to say I had to use my hovering skills on that toilet seat!!
After the disturbing bathroom experience I was pretty beat. My feet were also throbbing since I insisted on wearing my cute boots even though I knew they would be uncomfortable. Never again! I did my best to not complain but I was so beat. We’d both been up since 430am and even though dinner was amazing, I wanted nothing more than to get home to my comfy sweats. When I admitted this to Match he said, “Oh thank god! I’m so ready to go home, but I didn’t want to cut our date short.” 🙂 I love that we’re both such homebodies. We both agreed that dinner was great, but next time I will wear comfy shoes and we will have a better game plan of where we want to go afterwards.
After a piggy back ride from the Bart to our car because my feet would just not work, we finally got home. We settled onto the couch with beers, our pajama jams, and Call of Duty. It was the perfect end to a lovely date night with my husband.
Haven’t you ever played hooky before, Lois? – Clark, Lois and Clark
It’s finally Friday and time for my weekly confessions.
That I left work at 11:30am yesterday “sick” and took the rest of the day off. My receptionist was in on it and totally played up my sickness and loudly said I should “take my germs and go home so you won’t infect the rest of us.” Followed by a wink and a whispered, “have fun!” as I left.
That I’m calling in sick again today. What are they going to do? FIRE ME?! In the 4 years that I was there, I rarely used my sick days. So I’m doing it.
That while I have the day off I still can’t seem to just relax. I have a bunch of things to cross off the to-do list including: scrubbing the tub, walking Monkey, working out, getting the oil changed, tires rotated, sending a package at the post office, working on my Grandma’s 75th birthday slideshow, buying wedding gifts for Token Gay Couple and Geeky and her Fireman, buy Match some don tomas cigars online for graduation, and going dress shopping for graduation.
That I find most of the things on my to do list fun. I’m such a weirdo.
That I am over the moon excited about date night tonight. Match and I are finally going on that date in San Francisco. We’re taking the metro so we don’t have to drive at all and we can both drink and be CRAZY. We’re starting off with sushi and then we may bar hop or try to find a comedy club.
That I also plan on being far too handsy in public with my hubby. I blame it on academy. Three words for you: Wash.Board.Abs. Mama like!
