Tonight was our Tech Department’s Christmas party. Being in my new leadership role, this was the first time I organized a party as what my team affectionately (or not so affectionately) call me, “bosslady”.
It took awhile for the team, and the department as a whole, to warm up to the new changes. But I think the easy talk, laughing and general merriment tonight was a sign of how we’re grown. I am happy to be working with this crew, and I’m feeling a stronger sense of connection. We cracked up during the Dirty Santa game. I ended up with a pair of men’s size Star Wars boxers. I’m pretty sure I’ll be re-gifting those next year!
My little elf stole the evening with his cuteness. This will be my first year working the Christmas break since I started with the school district. I’m taking 2 days off work which will turn out to be 5 days off due to where Christmas lands. I’m so excited for some down time with my little guy, and with Match, though he doesn’t get to take any time off this year.
Last weekend we experienced the Oregon Zoo Lights. It was not the best night to go, since the weekend was crazy busy. But it was the only night we could go with Old Married Couple. I’m sad to say they’re moving back to California, now that they’re finally having a baby. I’m so happy for them, but I’m so sad we won’t get to have them close by, and watch their baby grow up. Sure we’ll visit, but I’m still really going to miss them.
Hoping you’re all enjoying the joys of the season, and not too much of the stress.
Happy New Year, friends! Here we are in 2017, and we are entering my 9th year of blogging. 9 years. I know I’m a lot more sporadic than I was in the beginning, but for those of you who have stuck around, I’m so grateful. I love being able to hop on the blog and look back over the years.
This was a tame New Years, but in the best way. Like Christmas, we spent it at home, just the three of us. We played Trouble with Piglet, and then went mattress shopping (bought a temper-pedic, omg so excited!) and then topped off the evening with a nice sushi dinner.
After Piglet passed out, Match and I stayed up to watch Deadpool, and then went to bed before midnight.
I have such a good feeling about this new year. I just received a promotion at work right before the Christmas break. I’m on my way to achieving some work goals I’ve been working towards for the past 2 years. It feels so good to be working for a place that appreciates me.
Match is in his electrical apprenticeship, and loving it. He doesn’t love the commute, and my hope for the New Year is that he gets hired on with a local company, and doesn’t have to make the 1.5 hour trek to Portland every day.
For Piglet, he’s loving life at his preschool. Switching daycares this past spring was the best decision we have made for him. He’s thriving there, and has so many little friends to spend his days with. He comes home singing adorable new songs, and his fine motor skills are really developing. They also make sure the kids get outside a lot, and get to be kids. Here’s an awesome photo his teacher sent me of the kids playing in the snow.
I asked him to tell him his new year’s resolutions, and here’s what he came up with:
1. Play more (ha, isn’t that 99% of his day?)
2. Eat more food (this was just too cute)
3. Keep dry diapers at night (I might have gently suggested this one. He’s been potty trained for years now, but night time is a whole other beast. I think he’s ready, but I know it has to be his idea.)
For me, I have a few resolutions this year.
1. Get my Project + certification for work
2. Get in a workout routine and stick to it. I really fell off the wagon this year, and I’d like to get back to it. I just feel so much better when I’m active.
3. Be more positive. I have found that there are times when I catch myself complaining a lot, especially about coworkers, sometimes even friends. It’s negative, and it doesn’t help anyone. I hope to ease up on that and focus on the positive.
I wish you all the very happiest of New Years. Do you have any resolutions this year?
March has come in like a lion for our household. We started off the month with Piglet switching to a new daycare. It was a hard decision, but one I’m so happy that we made. He is already thriving at the new care, we are saving money, but more importantly, he seems to be getting more education and more attention than he did at his previous care. The owner also posts Facebook updates, so I get to see his sweet little face and a glimpse of what he’s up to all day while I’m at work. It makes that time away from him just a tad easier.
Another big change is that Match got a new job! His last job was a temporary position, and it was a 45 minute commute one way. We had really hoped he would get the full time position, but life had other plans. As they say, when one door closes, another opens. Match got a job right here in town! No more commute, and the job an entry level woodworker, allowing Match more creativity. I’m excited that he’s learning how to work more with wood, which will equal pretty furniture for me. 😉
Another big change that happened is we have started house hunting again. We put in an offer on a cute little house, and it was just accepted! Of course it’s not ours til it passes inspection, financing goes through, etc. But it is very promising, and come this summer, this sweet little house might be ours! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m about to blow up Pinterest with all my ideas for what to do with this home.
On Veteran’s Day, Match and I both had the day off. Piglet really loves his daycare, so we decided to let him go for the day, and take a day just for us. I know it sounds selfish, but it’s so rare that we get the chance to go on dates.
We spent the morning “window shopping” checking out some houses for sale in our town. Then we went for a short hike out in the country.
After the hike, we headed to lunch.
Then it was back to the house to relax for a little bit, and then picked up Piglet early from daycare. It was such an awesome day, and it made me wish every day could be this way. It was a much needed boost for our relationship, which has been under work related stress for the past few weeks. We promised we’d start setting aside more time for dates and couple time. It’s so easy to forget how important that can be in a marriage.
For February being such a short month, I feel like so much has happened. I’ve been a terrible blogger lately, but I promise I do have some good excuses.
The first being that I’ve been busy with a freelancing data entry job. I’ve been spending far too much time on the computer, and by the time I’m done with my work for the day, I have had no energy left over to blog. I miss you all so much! We’ve also been taking advantage of this lovely and unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having. On Match’s days off, we have been spending time at the local nature preserves. This area has so many awesome walking paths and nature trails.
Last Tuesday I got together with a bunch of my friends from high school for a ladies dinner. I love how even though we don’t see each other often, the conversation flows easily, and in some ways, it is as if no time has passed. I’m so glad we all live so much closer together. I hope we can make these dinners a monthly event!
Last week another high school friend stopped by for a brief overnight stay with us while he was in town for business. Piglet was thrilled to spend time with his Uncle. I’m glad we were able to visit with him, as he is being deployed with the Air Force this summer.
Second, I had an interview for a tech job with a nearby school district. The job sounds like it would be a great fit for me, and I left the interview feeling very good about it. I’d be the school computer tech person, helping both students and teachers solve computer problems. It would be the perfect mix of problem solving and socializing, unlike my previous job where I was stuck at a computer alone all day. I would also get summers off, which would allow me to spend precious time with my son. He is growing up so fast, and I would love to have that time off to focus on him.
I am supposed to hear back about the job this week, and I’ve been anxiously waiting. Today marks a full week since my interview, and I’m trying hard to stay positive. According to my teacher friend, she said they loved me, and all my references said it sounds like I’ve got the job, but there is a catch. Apparently there is a year round job opening in June, and they are considering me for that position as well. Money-wise, we could benefit more from that position, but selfishly I prefer the summers off schedule (who wouldn’t?). So we will see what happens. At this point, I just want to be hired, and I am trying to have faith that it will all work out.
Finally, our landlord contacted us this week to inform us that he will not be renewing our lease at the end of May. His daughter will be moving into our home, and wants to move as early as April, if we can find housing by then. He was very apologetic, and said he will refund us May’s rent if we are able to accommodate. We had thought about moving, but we were hoping to wait until later in the summer, and this just adds another level of stress. We just got settled in, and now it is time to start packing up again. Hopefully this is also one of those changes that will ultimately make us happier in the long run. For now, I’m doing my best to just keep swimming, and not become overwhelmed by the stress. A local move will be far less stressful than an out of state move, and at least this time we have money coming in, and don’t have to worry about selling our home. Still, I look forward to getting more permanently settled, and knowing that we will be somewhere for more than 6 months.
