Blanche: Sophia says she has no appetite since she was stabbed in the back.
Rose: Oh my God, who stabbed Sophia?!
Dorothy: The chef at Benihana, Rose. –The Golden Girls
I promise I will write about the wedding soon. I’m still waiting for more pictures. In the meantime, I have to tell you all about the Benihana Fiasco. I may have mentioned in the past how awful my manager at my old job was to me. I think the term bitchface may have been used on more than one occasion. She had her moments of sweetness though, such as when she gave me a $50 gift certificate to Benihana as a late wedding gift in February.
So on Tuesday Match and I decided we should finally use the gift card and treat ourselves to some happy hour at Benihana. We figured with the amazing prices of their cocktails ($4 mojitos and mai thais) and sushi rolls for only $2.75 we couldn’t go wrong. Since we had our $50 gift card we ended up splurging and ordering way more food and drinks than we normally would have. They were delicious!
When the bill came we were so excited to see that it was just $51 and change. So with tip and tax we ended up spending only $15. We toasted to my old manager and said what a thoughtful gift this was and how nice of her. Just then the waitress returned with an apologetic look and said that she’d run the gift certificate twice and the card balance was zero. She kept apologizing like it was her fault. Meanwhile, I was red faced and horrified because there’s just no way we would have splurged on a meal like that, especially not this week when we have a wedding to go to and all the expenses that came along with it.
But we bit the bullet, paid our bill and left. I immediately called the number on the back of the card and confirmed that it was definitely a zero balance. I also discovered that the card had been deactivated on March 23rd, which happened to be the week before I gave my notice at work. This was also the day I’d had a horrible meeting with my manager where she told me I had to come into the office full time and basically told me I was lucky to have a job. Needless to say I was pissed!! I guess it is possible for a job to keep screwing me even after I’ve left it.
We walked around and explored some of the nearby buildings and shops to calm down and we both decided that it was still a great night so we can’t complain too much.
I did write to my receptionist friend and let her know the shitty thing my former manager had done. “Feel free to spread the word regarding her ‘generosity’ to the rest of the office” I told her. I just can’t believe someone would do something that messed up.
Have you ever had a gift certificate or gift card declined? Or had someone take back something they gave you as a gift?
