Lily: Hey. I’m just sitting here. Wearing my ring. My beautiful ring. Kinda makes wearing other stuff seem wrong. Like… my shirt. Kinda don’t wanna wear my shirt any more. Or my underwear. Oh, that’s right, I’m not wearing any.
Marshall: [stops working and looks at Lily] No underwear?
Lily: Not even slightly.

Ted: Guys…boundaries! –How I Met Your Mother
As promised, I will give you the details of the proposal. Now that we’re back from Oregon I can also give you better pictures of the ring. So here’s the story of how Match asked me to marry him. 🙂
It was Wednesday, December 23rd and we had just finished the grueling 8.5 hour drive up to my parent’s house in Oregon the night before. We had a great time on the road trip-I even got Match to sing for me. He wouldn’t do it with the music down, but he did sing, and he sounded good! We talked about a lot of different things, and we were both grinning like idiots for most of the ride.
Wednesday morning was just the four of us. My brother, his kids and his wife weren’t coming over until late that night. Match and I went for a walk around the property and spent the day lounging. We had plans to go to dinner and Shore Acres Little did I know that earlier that morning while I was in the shower Match was in the kitchen asking my parents permission to marry me. Match told me later that my mom was so happy she cried, and that my stepdad also had tears in his eyes. He then said something sassy but also so fitting: “If you can handle her, you can have her!” Aww Pops.
That evening we headed to dinner in a town about 20 minutes from my folks’ house, where we enjoyed the oh so elegant all you can eat buffet at the Lucky Dragon. I know fancy right? But my parents loved it, and Match is a bottomless pit so he thought it was pretty great too. My mom was kind of being goofy all night, but I figured she was just excited to see us both.
Finally we arrived at Shore Acres. Now I had been telling Match all about the lights at Shore Acres and how we’d always go there as kids. He knew it meant a lot to me. We got there and first thing we did was get hot cider since it was freezing outside. Then we walked along the grounds looking at the Christmas lights.
I was having a grand old time and couldn’t understand why my mom and pops kept lagging behind. Again, I just thought my mom was being her typical self, and I just rolled my eyes and thought, “mothers”.
We went through the park pretty quickly, and I assumed it was because Match was cold. After the park, Match said he wanted to go check out the observatory area outside the park. I don’t know if I mentioned this but Shore Acres is a state park on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We were standing right near a spot like this:
But it was dark so this is what it looked like, except in person you could see the waves crashing when you looked down, and the moon was shining overhead.
That little white light out there is the lone crabbing boat that was out in the ocean.
So we’re standing there, and I’m looking over the cliff and watching the waves crash. Then I was facing the water and asked Match if my parents were going to catch up with us or if they were waiting in the car. He said no, because, and tapped me on the shoulder so I’d turn around, and he’s on one knee, holding out the ring in a velvet box. He used my full name including my middle name and said, “Will you marry me?”
I wish I could say I was graceful and poised. I wish I could say I threw my arms around him immediately and kissed him like in those old fashioned movies. Instead, I just started sputtering, “Are you serious?!” And then I realized I wasn’t just seeing things and there was an actual ring in his hand and I threw my arms around him, kissed him and said “of course I will, I love you!” Then I laughed and said, “I was thinking you better not be tying your shoes right now!” Then we kissed some more and stood their holding each other. I made him take a picture with me of course, because I had to capture the moment. I cropped us out of it, but here’s me hugging him and proudly displaying the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen!
Here are two pictures I took the next day. Isn’t it pretty? I love how it floats about the band. Luckily Match got thought to get insurance online for the ring because I worry that the diamond will fall out. He picked the ring out all on his own too. That night he proposed was the first time I’d ever seen it!
Match said he wished we could be alone for awhile, but my parents were anxiously waiting in the car. In fact, they were honking the horn when we started kissing. I got back to the car and hugged my mom and pops and we were all crying and laughing. It felt so surreal, as if I were dreaming and any minute I may wake up.
When we got back to the house Match and I finally had a moment to ourselves. We stood in the camper we were staying in, and he held me and we slowly swayed back and forth. “You’re going to be my wife. I couldn’t have asked for a better person for me than you. You’re my dream girl, and now you’re mine!” Match said to me as he held me. I curled up in his arms as we laid down to go to sleep (I’m censoring out what happened in between that swaying moment and when we actually fell asleep. Let’s just say we enjoyed our newly engaged status!). “And you’re mine” I whispered as we both fell asleep with huge smiles on our faces.
