Volunteering My Time

What do you mean I didn’t get the job? …Budget problems? But I was volunteering! -Carlton, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

It was so hard coming back to work this morning. Having four days off was so nice. I got a lot done, and I was also able to just put my feet up and relax. It doesn’t help that I still don’t like working at this IT inbound call center where I sit around and wait for the phone to ring. It does have its good points, like being able to blog. But I can’t wait to be a part of something more.

I signed up today for a volunteer opportunity with the Boys and Girls Club. It should be a lot of fun, and a good way to gain some field experience for teaching. I sent my application in at the beginning of the month, so I should be hearing back from my college any day now. From there, I’ll have to make the big decision: do I keep working as long as possible while going to school, or do I quit? It’s a scary idea, especially in this economic climate. So we’ll see-I’ve just decided to cross that bridge when I get to it. For now, I just hope I get in!

Feels Like Family

I’m completely, completely in love with you. I even love the things about you that I hate…because you make me feel like I don’t have to be anyone other than who I am and, to me, that feels like family and that’s what I want us to be. I want us to be a family because that never ends. -Justin, Brothers & Sisters

Yesterday’s Thanksgiving dinner made me feel like I was once again a part IMG_7024of Match’s family. I received such a warm welcome from not only Match’s parents, but the entire clan (that’s what they call themselves, it’s five sisters, and they can be quite formidable). I instantly felt at home, and we settled in to a relaxing afternoon of wine, way too much food, and great company. (more…)

What I’m Thankful For

I am thankful for this beautiful fall we’ve been having. Yeah, the other day I was at the bus stop and this lovely fall breeze came in out of nowhere and blew this chick’s skirt right up. Oh, which reminds me. I am also thankful for thongs. -Joey, Friends

It’s that time of year again, Thanksgiving. It’s not about eating until we’re so full we can’t breathe. It’s not about Black Friday where every store has promotional items at crazy low prices (I will do some online shopping then, because, well, who can pass up those deals?!). What Thanksgiving is really about spending time with family, with the people we love, and being thankful for what we have. (more…)

Hiking in Jack London Park

Justin : I had a weird dream last night.
Rebecca : Yeah ?
Justin : Yeah that your mother and my sister were singing show tunes in tomato-red dresses.
Rebecca : That’s so bizarre,’cause I actually had the exact same one only in my dream, we found out we were orphans.
Justin : That’s a good dream. All right, tell me more.
Rebecca : Well, then we decided to sail off to thailand, and there were pirates.
Justin : I like pirates.
Rebecca : I know. Tell me yours.
Justin : Okay, mine. I’m a doctor and, you … you are an amazing photographer. And on sundays we go for walks on the beach or we can go hiking with our dog buster.
Rebecca : Does it have to be buster ?
Justin: Marry me. I’m serious.
Rebecca: Justin…
Justin: That’s the dream I want. I want to be a doctor and I want to be a husband and I want to be a father and it’s all because of you, Rebecca.
Rebecca: Me?
Justin: God, you make everything feel possible. You make me possible. -Brothers & Sisters

11046_559274602383_33200666_33106133_6265941_nSaturday Match and I had one of the best Saturdays we’ve had together in a long time. The weather was beautiful, sunny but cold and crisp, the perfect fall day. We decided to go for a hike at Jack London National Park, just a short drive from where we live. Not only was it a great excuse to spend some quality time together, but I figured hiking could be how to lose belly fat before the holidays. One can only hope right? We started out by touring through the Jack London museum, where we learned all kinds of things about the late writer. The life he led with his wife Charmian sounded so romantic! They traveled all over the world by boat, they designed and built their dream home together, and even though it burned down before they could move in, it must have been fun to do that together. They had a beautiful cottage where they held grand dinner parties and I couldn’t help but be envious. To live in a time where people dressed up and dinners were an event. And to live out in the countryside, with acres of land and nothing else but beautiful wilderness and quiet. (more…)
